It wouldn’t be astonishing to know that, shortly after taking these photos, warm rain began falling from the sky.
Our neighborhood in Boryspil is surrounded by fields of wheat, corn, and sunflowers, yielding profitable crops and boasting gorgeous landscapes. And every summer, these expanses of land turn golden yellow in the face of the sun.
Coincidentally, sunflowers are Ukraine’s national flower, representing a myriad of concepts and being displayed in a wide range all across the country. As a child, I even used to think that the flag represented not the classic wheat field and sky, but rather a similar background to the one I stood in now.
Summers in Ukraine are composed of this setting: golden land and brilliant sky, carrying on under torrential rain, basking heat, or morning fog.
And to quote from my artist statement: “…it is a tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and a testament to the enduring power of hope in the face of adversity. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit prevails if it wills itself to do so.”
